REPORTS TO: Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The athletic trainer is responsible for coordinating Spartanburg School District 5’s overall sports medicine program; to include injury prevention, evaluation, management and treatment of athletic injuries, short- and long-term rehabilitation of athletic injuries, education and counseling of student athletes regarding safe participation in sports.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide athletic training services for the Athletic Department events, including attendance at practices, all home sporting events, all away football games, and sponsored tournaments.
- Evaluate any injury and determine athlete’s ability to practice or compete.
- Render first aid to injured players, such as giving artificial respiration, cleaning and bandaging wounds, and applying heat and cold to promote healing.
- Provide treatment as prescribed by physician to injured athletes daily and weekends.
- Communicate with team physicians on the injury and treatment of athletes.
- Oversee compilation, input, organization, and maintenance of all medical records, treatment, sports physicals, and insurance for all student athletes.
- Communicate with parents with regard to prevention of injury, injury care, doctor consultation and referral, and insurance benefits.
- Act as a liaison between physician, athlete, parent, and coach.
- Review and determine eligibility of insurance claims with the school athletic insurance and supervise prompt processing of medical bills and insurance claims.
- Report status of injured student-athletes to appropriate coaching staff.
- Coordinate with trainers from other high schools in regards to care for athletes at away games.
- Work in conjunction with the Strength and Conditioning Coach with regard to strength and conditioning of rehabilitating student athletes, injury prevention, and nutritional issues.
- Attain, train and supervise student athletic trainers and football managers.
- Secure and maintain AED’s.
- Provide yearly in-service to coaching staff in regards to athlete safety, injury prevention, CPR SCHSL regulations regarding injured athlete’s return to play, and policy on medical paperwork.
- Establish and enforce an emergency action plan for athletic teams in conjunction with team physicians, area emergency medical services, and local hospitals.
- Assist school nurse in regards to school injuries, medical emergencies, and medical plans for students.
- Serve as a First Responder.
- Maintain appropriate certifications to include: NATA, CPR, OSHA, First Responder, and DHEC.
- Recruit and maintain local physicians to serve as team physicians, medical consultants, and assist with pre-participation physical examinations.
- Works well with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director/Principal/Superintendent
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Conducts duties in both office and outdoor environments with some exposure to various environmental conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention to detail and working with students. Physical demands may require the lifting or moving of items weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional local or out-of-state travel is required; some overnight travel may be required. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment and athletic equipment.
Pay: $35 per hour
