POSITION: AVID Elective Teacher (6th, 7th, and 8th grade), 2024-2025
LOCATION: DR Hill Middle School
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree
- Valid South Carolina Middle Level or Secondary Level Teaching Certificate
- Mandatory training will be provided at the expense of the district
- Minimum of five years teaching experience
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and AVID District Director
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, provide classroom instruction that equitably supports students’ academic success across content areas. The AVID elective teacher will follow a curriculum that features writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading, note taking, and study skills while promoting college, career, and life skills and habits that enables all students to be prepared to fulfill their academic and extracurricular potential.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cooperates in developing a program of continuous progress consistent with district goals and objectives to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of pupils.
- Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate learning experiences.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Advocates and promotes academic success and equity for all students.
- Sets high expectations for student achievement and monitors student success.
- Participates in ongoing professional learning opportunities with local, state, or national AVID staff through virtual and face-to-face training, which includes a three-day AVID training between June and August.
- Actively participates on the school’s AVID Site Team.
- Provide professional development on AVID related initiatives and instructional strategies to the school and/or district faculty.
- Collaborates with stakeholders (AVID students, AVID parents, AVID tutors, counselors, teachers, administrators, and community) to develop an AVID program based in a college-going culture.
- Collects and analyzes AVID student data and regularly monitors AVID students’ academic progress.
- Advocates for AVID students’ access to and success in rigorous courses.
- Teaches and promotes the use of WICOR instructional strategies across content areas through providing staff development.
- Shares and models AVID methodologies with colleagues.
- Assists in the training of tutors using AVID tutorial training materials.
- Provides adequate plans for substitute teachers.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to properly care for all property, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.
- Is punctual and responsible in performing all duties and activities as assigned.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life, conduct and behavior in a fair and just manner.
- Participates in school or district staff development programs as assigned by principal or superintendent.
- Attends staff meetings, serves on staff committees as requested, and accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular or other activities as assigned by principal or superintendent.
- Does not abuse sick or personal leave and is absent only when it is absolutely necessary.
- Recognizes and follows the appropriate procedures in the "chain of command" as designated by board policies and/or administrative procedures.
- Presents a positive image of Spartanburg District Five Schools at all times.
- Performs other related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Conducts duties in a classroom environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and working with students. Physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring lifting/moving of items up to 25 pounds. Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel is required. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment.
